Short answer: In November 2022, Experian India launched a service that sends your Experian credit score free on WhatsApp: you message +91-9920035444, share your name, email and mobile number, and receive your score, with an option to get a password-protected full report by email. It does not affect your score. In 2026 you also have a legal right to one free full credit report with score every calendar year from each credit bureau, so WhatsApp is just one convenient route.

What Experian launched

Experian Credit Information Company of India is one of four RBI-licensed credit bureaus, alongside TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. In its November 2022 announcement, Experian said it was the first bureau in India to offer free credit scores over WhatsApp, aimed at people who use WhatsApp daily but rarely visit financial websites.

We have not been able to independently confirm in October 2026 that the WhatsApp flow works exactly as it did at launch. Before you share details, check that the number is listed on Experian India’s own website.

How to check your Experian score on WhatsApp

  1. Save or open the number +91-9920035444 in WhatsApp, using the mobile number registered with your loans and cards.
  2. Send ‘Hi’ to start the chat.
  3. Share your name, email address and mobile number when asked. You may be asked for consent and to verify via OTP.
  4. Receive your Experian credit score in the chat.
  5. Optionally, request your full credit report. Experian sends it as a password-protected file to your email.

Checking your own score is a ‘soft’ enquiry. It does not lower your score, however often you check.

What changed since 2022: your free-report rights

RBI’s Master Direction on Credit Information Reporting, 2025 (issued 6 January 2025) consolidated the rules on credit reports. Key points for consumers:

RuleWhat it means for you
One free full report a yearEach bureau must give you one free full credit report with score per calendar year, with a prominent link on its home page
Score range 300–900Credit scores are standardised on a 300 to 900 scale
Fortnightly reportingLenders update your data as of the 15th and end of each month, so payments show faster than under the old monthly cycle
Access alertsBureaus send SMS or email alerts when specified users pull your report; lenders alert you when they report a default or DPD
Complaint compensationIf a complaint is not resolved in 30 calendar days, you are entitled to ₹100 per day of delay
Rejected applicationsBureaus must not report that you were declined for a loan

Some of these rules first came in through RBI’s October 2023 circular on customer service by credit bureaus and lenders. Read our guide to your rights over your credit report for more.

Other free ways to get your credit report

Lenders do not all use the same bureau, so it is worth checking all four once a year. Our credit reports explainer compares them.

How lenders use your Experian score

Banks and NBFCs pull a report from one or more bureaus when you apply. The score is usually a first filter; the decision then depends on the details in the report and on your income. In practice lenders look at:

Because different lenders prefer different bureaus, a good Experian score with a poor CIBIL score usually means one report holds data the other does not. Compare them line by line.

What to do after you see your score

A score is a summary. The report behind it is what matters. Look for:

Genuine errors can be disputed with the bureau, which checks with the lender; see how to raise a dispute. Accurate negative entries cannot be removed, but their impact fades as you build a record of on-time payments.

Worked example: one number that moves your score

Priya has one credit card with a ₹1,00,000 limit and usually carries a ₹60,000 balance on the statement date. Her utilisation is 60%. If she pays down the card before the statement date so the reported balance is ₹25,000, utilisation falls to 25%. With fortnightly reporting, the lower balance can reach the bureau within weeks. There is no guarantee of a particular score change, but high utilisation is one of the most common and fixable drags on a score. For more, see how to improve your CIBIL score.

Frequently asked questions

Does checking my score on WhatsApp reduce it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not affect your score. Only lender enquiries made when you apply for credit are recorded as hard enquiries.

Is my Experian score the same as my CIBIL score?

No. Each bureau uses its own model and may hold slightly different data, so your scores can differ. All are on a 300 to 900 scale.

How often can I get a free report?

RBI requires each bureau to give you one free full credit report with score every calendar year. Many bureaus and apps offer more frequent free score checks.

What if my report has an error?

Raise a dispute with the bureau or the lender. If the complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days, RBI rules entitle you to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay.

Can the WhatsApp service tell me why my score is low?

The score alone will not. Request the full report and look at payment history, utilisation, enquiries and account status.
