Short answer: DPD means “days past due”: how many days late a payment was in a given month. 000 means paid on time; 030, 060 or 090 mean 30, 60 or 90 days late; XXX means the lender did not report that month. Codes such as SMA, SUB, DBT and LSS show how the lender classifies the account, from early stress to loss.

Payment history codes
| Code | Meaning | How lenders see it |
|---|---|---|
| 000 or STD | Paid on time / standard account | Good |
| XXX | Not reported for that month | Neutral, but check why |
| 001 to 029 | A few days late | A minor blemish if rare |
| 030, 060, 090 | 30, 60 or 90 days late | Increasingly serious |
| SMA | Special Mention Account: overdue, showing early signs of stress | A warning sign |
| SUB | Substandard: a non-performing account for a shorter period | Serious |
| DBT | Doubtful: non-performing for longer | Very serious |
| LSS | Loss: the lender considers it largely unrecoverable | Very serious |
CIBIL reports usually show up to about the last 36 months of payment history for each account. Recent DPD matters far more than DPD from years ago.
How to clear DPD from your report
- If the DPD is correct, it stays as history. Pay the overdue amount, keep the account current, and its effect fades as new on-time months are added.
- If the DPD is wrong (you paid on time), raise a dispute with payment proof. See how to dispute your CIBIL report.
- If it is from a loan you never took, dispute it and write to the lender immediately.
A worked example
Ravi missed one EMI in March and paid it about 40 days later. His report shows a DPD figure for March (around 030 to 040, depending on how the lender reports) and 000 from April onward. A lender reviewing his report in the following months sees one late payment followed by a clean record, which is far less damaging than repeated DPD or an SMA classification.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good DPD in CIBIL?
000 in every month. Any DPD is a negative mark; the higher and more recent it is, the more it hurts.
What does XXX mean in CIBIL?
The lender did not report payment information for that month. It is not a negative mark by itself, but many XXX months may mean the account is not being reported properly.
Does 30 DPD reduce my score a lot?
One 30-day late payment hurts, especially if recent, but its effect fades with on-time payments. Repeated DPD or 90+ DPD hurts much more.
