Short answer: Your CIBIL report is the record TransUnion CIBIL keeps of every loan and credit card in your name, how you repaid them and who has checked your credit. Scores run from 300 to 900. You can get one free full report a year from the official CIBIL website or app, and you can dispute any error online; the bureau must resolve it within 30 days.

TransUnion CIBIL is India’s oldest and best-known credit bureau, and many lenders check it first. “CIBIL score” has become shorthand for any credit score.

Two things only CIBIL users usually ask about
- “NH” or “NA” instead of a score: CIBIL usually shows NH when you have no credit history and NA when your history is too short to score. It is not a bad score. Lenders simply have less to go on.
- CIBIL Rank or CMR: businesses get a company credit report with a rank (CMR) instead of a 300 to 900 score. Personal loans use your individual report.
How to get your free CIBIL report
- Go to the official CIBIL website or app. Avoid third-party links that ask for payment.
- Verify your identity with PAN and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Choose the free annual report. Paid plans with frequent refreshes are optional.
- Download and save the PDF, and note the report date.
How to dispute an error on CIBIL
- Use the dispute section on the official CIBIL website or app and pick the exact account or detail that is wrong.
- Attach proof: a closure letter or NOC, payment receipts, or your ID for personal details.
- The bureau checks with the lender that reported the data. If the lender’s data is wrong, the lender must correct it and the bureau updates your report.
- If it is not resolved within 30 days, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. Our dispute guide has a ready letter.
Why your CIBIL score differs from other bureaus
Each bureau uses its own scoring model, and not every lender reports to every bureau on the same day. Small differences are normal. A large gap usually means one bureau is missing an account or holds an error, so check that report closely.
Your rights
- One free full report a year from each bureau (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark).
- Checking your own report does not lower your score. It is a soft enquiry.
- Lenders report at least every fortnight, so payments and corrections show faster than before.
- Alerts: bureaus must alert you by SMS or email when your report is accessed, and lenders must tell you when they report a default.
- Disputes: bureaus must resolve complaints within 30 days, and lenders must update corrected data within 21 days. If either misses the deadline, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 a day.

Frequently asked questions
Is the CIBIL report free?
Yes. You are entitled to one free full report a year from CIBIL. Frequent refreshes or score tracking may be paid add-ons.
Do lenders check CIBIL?
Lenders choose which bureaus to pull, and many check more than one. Every regulated lender must report to all four bureaus, so your loans should appear in each.
How long does a CIBIL dispute take?
The bureau must resolve it within 30 days. If the lender has to correct data, it must do so within 21 days. Delays entitle you to ₹100 a day in compensation.
Does checking my report lower my score?
No. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry. Only applications for loans and cards create hard enquiries.
