Short answer: A CIBIL score of 550 is very low. Unsecured personal loans are unlikely until the problem account is fixed. Secured loans (gold, fixed deposit) are the realistic route. Your income, existing EMIs and the reason your score is 550 matter as much as the number itself.
Last updated: 12 October 2026. Figures are worked examples using the standard EMI formula. Your lender’s offer and Key Fact Statement (KFS) decide the real numbers.
What a 550 CIBIL score means
CIBIL scores run from 300 to 900. A score around 550 usually means a recent default, a write-off or a settlement on your report, or several missed payments. Lenders do not publish minimum scores, and each one weighs your score alongside your income, job and recent history.
| Score | How lenders usually see it |
|---|---|
| 750 and above | Low risk |
| 700 to 749 | Acceptable |
| 650 to 699 | Borderline |
| 600 to 649 | Risky |
| Below 600 | High risk |
Your realistic options with a 550 score
- A gold loan, where the gold matters more than your score
- A loan against a fixed deposit, usually at a rate a little above the FD rate
- A secured credit card against an FD, to start rebuilding
- A small loan with a co-applicant who has a good score

What a loan could cost you at 550
A lower score usually means a higher rate. Here is what the same ₹1 lakh loan over 24 months costs at different rates:
| Interest rate | EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 14% | ₹4,801 | ₹15,231 |
| 18% | ₹4,992 | ₹19,818 |
| 24% | ₹5,287 | ₹26,891 |
| 30% | ₹5,591 | ₹34,191 |
| 36% | ₹5,905 | ₹41,714 |
Add the processing fee plus 18% GST, and compare the APR and total amount payable in each lender’s Key Fact Statement.
How to raise a 550 score
- Download your report and list every overdue or settled account.
- Clear or regularise overdue accounts first. A closed account helps; an open default keeps your score down.
- Do not apply for unsecured loans until the overdue accounts are fixed. Rejections add hard enquiries.
- After 6 to 12 months of on-time payments, check again.
You get one free full credit report a year from each bureau (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark). Checking your own score does not lower it.
Avoid these traps
- Offers of loans “without a CIBIL check” in return for an upfront fee or blank signed cheques.
- Apps that ask for access to your contacts and photos.
- Settling a loan for less than you owe unless there is no alternative. “Settled” stays on your report for years.
- Lenders not on RBI’s lists. Check any finance company in our RBI-registered NBFC list.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a personal loan with a 550 CIBIL score?
Unsecured personal loans are unlikely until the problem account is fixed. Secured loans (gold, fixed deposit) are the realistic route.
Which app gives a loan with a 550 CIBIL score?
No app publishes a minimum score or guarantees approval. Compare RBI-listed apps and their stated APRs in our low credit score loan app list, and apply to one at a time.
How long does it take to improve a 550 score?
It depends on the cause. Clearing overdue accounts and keeping card balances low usually shows results within a few months, because lenders report at least every fortnight.
Does checking my score reduce it?
No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry. Only loan and card applications create hard enquiries.
