Short answer: A CIBIL score of 650 is borderline. Many NBFCs and some banks will consider you, often for smaller amounts or at higher rates than borrowers above 700. Your income, existing EMIs and the reason your score is 650 matter as much as the number itself.
Last updated: 12 October 2026. Figures are worked examples using the standard EMI formula. Your lender’s offer and Key Fact Statement (KFS) decide the real numbers.
What a 650 CIBIL score means
CIBIL scores run from 300 to 900. A score around 650 usually means some late payments in the past, a short credit history, or high use of your credit limits. Lenders do not publish minimum scores, and each one weighs your score alongside your income, job and recent history.
| Score | How lenders usually see it |
|---|---|
| 750 and above | Low risk |
| 700 to 749 | Acceptable |
| 650 to 699 | Borderline |
| 600 to 649 | Risky |
| Below 600 | High risk |
Your realistic options with a 650 score
- NBFC personal loans, often with a moderate amount and rate
- Some banks, especially where you hold your salary account
- A co-applicant to improve the amount or rate
- Larger amounts through secured loans

What a loan could cost you at 650
A lower score usually means a higher rate. Here is what the same ₹1 lakh loan over 24 months costs at different rates:
| Interest rate | EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 14% | ₹4,801 | ₹15,231 |
| 18% | ₹4,992 | ₹19,818 |
| 24% | ₹5,287 | ₹26,891 |
| 30% | ₹5,591 | ₹34,191 |
| 36% | ₹5,905 | ₹41,714 |
Add the processing fee plus 18% GST, and compare the APR and total amount payable in each lender’s Key Fact Statement.
How to raise a 650 score
- Lower your credit card balances before you apply.
- Check your report for errors and dispute them; bureaus must resolve disputes within 30 days.
- Apply where you hold your salary account first.
- Compare APRs in the KFS rather than accepting the first offer.
You get one free full credit report a year from each bureau (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark). Checking your own score does not lower it.
Avoid these traps
- Offers of loans “without a CIBIL check” in return for an upfront fee or blank signed cheques.
- Apps that ask for access to your contacts and photos.
- Settling a loan for less than you owe unless there is no alternative. “Settled” stays on your report for years.
- Lenders not on RBI’s lists. Check any finance company in our RBI-registered NBFC list.
