Five apps, five due dates, and a salary that is gone before the month is half done. Replacing them all with one loan sounds like relief, and it can be. But app loan consolidation goes wrong in a few predictable ways, and most of them happen in the first week.

Short answer: Before you consolidate payday or app loans in India, make sure the new loan covers the full closing amount of every app loan, that the money comes into your own account, and that you can close each loan the same day and collect a NOC. Compare the total you will repay before and after using the KFS: a consolidation loan may cost more in total, and its real value is one manageable EMI that ends the borrow-to-repay cycle.

Why the new loan must cover every app loan

Short-tenure app loans feed each other. When one is due, you borrow from another. If your consolidation loan closes three loans but leaves two running, those two still have their short deadlines, and you will be tempted to borrow again to meet them.

Here is how that plays out. Sana, 26, Lucknow, takes home ₹42,000 a month. This is an illustrative example.

App loanAmount to close todayScheduled payments left
A₹18,000₹7,000 × 3 = ₹21,000
B₹14,500₹5,500 × 3 = ₹16,500
C₹11,000₹12,000 once
D₹9,500₹3,600 × 3 = ₹10,800
E₹7,000₹7,800 once
Total₹60,000₹68,100

If a lender approves only ₹40,000, Sana can close A, B and E (₹18,000 + ₹14,500 + ₹7,000 = ₹39,500). Loans C and D, worth ₹20,500, stay open, with ₹15,600 due this month on top of the new EMI. That is how the cycle restarts.

So the rule is simple: borrow enough to close everything, including any foreclosure or closure charges, or wait until you can. If you cannot get the full amount, use the no-new-borrowing steps in our honest guide to getting out of loan app debt first.

How the money moves under RBI’s rules

Under RBI’s Digital Lending Directions, a regulated lender must pay the loan directly into your own bank account. The new lender does not usually pay your app loans for you. That puts the job in your hands:

  1. Before the money arrives, note the closing amount shown in each app for the next day or two. These can change daily.
  2. When the loan lands, pay every app loan the same day, starting with any that are overdue.
  3. Pay only through the app or the lender’s official channel. Never pay an individual’s UPI ID, and never share OTPs or your UPI PIN.
  4. Do not spend the spare amount. Keep it for any closure charge that shows up.

Remember that digital loans have a cooling-off (look-up) period, set by the lender’s board and at least one day. If you change your mind in that window, you can exit by repaying the principal and the proportionate APR, without a penalty.

Close each loan properly and collect your NOCs

A loan that is “paid” is not always “closed”. For each app:

Then check your CIBIL report after 30–45 days. Lenders report at least every fortnight, so each account should show “Closed” by then. If one still shows as active, or a lender appears that you do not recognise, raise a dispute with the bureau; see our guide to an unknown lender on your CIBIL report. Bureaus must resolve disputes within 30 days.

An honest cost comparison template

Fill this in for your own loans before you sign anything. Here it is with Sana’s numbers, using example terms of ₹64,000 at 28% a year (reducing balance) with a 2.5% processing fee plus GST.

The fee is ₹1,600 + ₹288 GST = ₹1,888, deducted upfront, so she receives ₹62,112. That covers all five loans (₹60,000) with ₹2,112 to spare.

Keep the app loansNew loan, 12 monthsNew loan, 15 months
Monthly outgo on these debts₹35,900 this month₹6,176₹5,106
Number of due dates511
Total still to repay₹68,100about ₹74,100about ₹76,600
Difference vs keeping them—about ₹6,000 moreabout ₹8,500 more

On paper, consolidation costs Sana more. But the “keep” column assumes she finds ₹35,900 this month without borrowing again, which is more than her whole salary once her other EMIs are added. In practice she would take new app loans with new fees. The honest case for consolidation is that it swaps an impossible month for a payable one and lets her close every account cleanly. Choose the shortest tenure you can afford, because every extra month adds interest.

Our example of how a ₹5,000 app loan becomes ₹15,000 shows what that borrow-to-repay route can cost.

If your FOIR is too high, consider a co-applicant

Lenders look at FOIR, the share of your income that goes to EMIs: total monthly EMIs ÷ net monthly income. Many prefer it below roughly 50–60% after the new loan, though this varies.

Sana also pays a ₹3,500 two-wheeler EMI and a ₹14,000 personal loan EMI, so ₹17,500 of fixed EMIs.

A co-applicant shares responsibility for the loan, so only ask someone who understands that and can see the full numbers. You can test your own figures with our FOIR eligibility calculator. If you keep getting rejected, stop applying for a while: each application is a hard enquiry, and loan stacking already shows up as many small accounts on your report.

Check before you apply

  • The APR and total amount payable in the Key Fact Statement (KFS), compared with what you pay today
  • Processing fee plus 18% GST, and any insurance or add-ons (ask whether they are optional)
  • Foreclosure charges on your existing loans and on the new loan
  • That the new loan covers every debt you plan to close, and that you will get a closure letter or NOC for each
  • Whether the new EMI fits your monthly budget after essentials and savings
  • That the lender is RBI-regulated: check our lender directory and loan app directory

Frequently asked questions

Can all my loan app loans be combined into one?

Usually yes, through a personal loan large enough to close every one of them. You receive the money in your own account and repay each app yourself. Make sure the amount covers every closing balance before you accept.

Is a consolidation loan cheaper than app loans?

Not always. For borrowers with several app loans, the new loan can itself be expensive. Compare the APR and total amount payable on the KFS against what you still owe, and be honest about whether you could repay the app loans without borrowing again.

How long after closing app loans does CIBIL update?

Lenders report to credit bureaus at least every fortnight, so closures often show within a few weeks. Check your report after 30–45 days. If an account still looks open, send the lender your NOC and raise a dispute with the bureau.

What if a lender refuses to close my loan after I pay?

Write to the lender’s grievance redressal officer with your receipts. If it is not resolved within 30 days, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. It is free to file.
