Short answer: On a take-home salary of ₹20,000 with no other EMIs, lenders using a 50% FOIR limit could lend up to about ₹2.55 lakh at 24% over 36 months. That is the ceiling, not a typical offer. If you already pay EMIs, or your lender uses a lower limit, the amount falls. Your credit score, employer and job history decide the final offer.

At ₹20,000 more NBFC apps will consider you, but many banks still want more. Lenders look closely at whether your salary is credited to your bank account on a fixed date each month.

How much can you borrow on ₹20,000 a month?

Lenders usually allow your total EMIs to reach about 50% of your take-home pay. On ₹20,000, that is an EMI of up to ₹10,000 a month. Here is the largest loan that EMI supports:

TenureAt 16% a yearAt 24% a yearAt 30% a year
12 months₹1.10 lakh₹1.06 lakh₹1.03 lakh
24 months₹2.04 lakh₹1.89 lakh₹1.79 lakh
36 months₹2.84 lakh₹2.55 lakh₹2.36 lakh

If your lender uses a 40% limit (EMI up to ₹8,000):

TenureAt 16%At 24%At 30%
12 months₹88,173₹84,603₹82,062
24 months₹1.63 lakh₹1.51 lakh₹1.43 lakh
36 months₹2.28 lakh₹2.04 lakh₹1.88 lakh

If you already pay ₹3,000 a month in EMIs (15% of your salary), the room left at a 50% limit is ₹7,000:

TenureAt 16%At 24%At 30%
12 months₹77,151₹74,027₹71,804
24 months₹1.43 lakh₹1.32 lakh₹1.25 lakh
36 months₹1.99 lakh₹1.78 lakh₹1.65 lakh

How these are worked out: maximum EMI = salary × FOIR limit − existing EMIs, then the loan is the amount that EMI repays at the given rate and tenure. Learn more in our FOIR guide, or download the FOIR Excel calculator.

A sensible amount to ask for

Just because a loan fits the limit does not mean it fits your month. A loan of ₹1,30,000 at 24% over 24 months costs about ₹6,873 a month, which is 34% of your salary, and you repay about ₹1,64,958 in total. Leave room for rent, food and an emergency.

Yes, many lenders will consider a take-home salary of ₹20,000, especially NBFCs. The amount depends on your existing EMIs, credit score and employer.

How much personal loan can I get on ₹20,000 salary?

With no other EMIs and a 50% FOIR limit, up to about ₹2.55 lakh at 24% over 36 months. A lower limit, existing EMIs or a shorter tenure reduces it.
