Short answer: You cannot edit the bank account inside an ITR that is already filed, but you rarely need to. Log in to the income tax e-filing portal, add and pre-validate the new account under My Profile → My Bank Account, and nominate it for refund. Address, email and mobile number are updated in My Profile. Only errors in income, deductions or tax figures need a revised return.

Last updated: 13 October 2026.

This guide replaces our 2022 article, which described an older “Change ITR Form Particulars” request. That route belonged to the previous e-filing website. The current portal, live since 2021, separates your profile (bank accounts, contact details, address) from your return. So most updates no longer touch the ITR at all.

Step by step: add and pre-validate a new bank account

The Income Tax Department pays refunds only to a pre-validated account linked to your PAN. If the account you typed in your ITR has since closed, or your bank merged and changed IFSC codes, validate a working account before the refund is processed.

  1. Log in at the e-filing portal with your PAN (user ID) and password.
  2. Open My Profile and choose My Bank Account.
  3. Click Add Bank Account. Enter the account number, account type, holder type and IFSC. The bank name and branch fill in automatically.
  4. Submit. Validation happens with your bank in the background. The department’s My Bank Account FAQs say the status can take 10 to 12 working days, and you are told by SMS and email.
  5. Once the status shows Validated, switch on Nominate for refund for that account.
  6. Optionally enable EVC on it so you can e-verify returns and requests with a bank-generated code.

Eligible account types include savings, current, cash credit, overdraft and NRO accounts. A loan account or a PPF account will fail validation. Your PAN must be linked to the account at the bank, and the name at the bank should match your PAN. A mismatch in name or an unlinked PAN is the most common reason validation fails.

If validation fails

Your refund failed: raise a Refund Reissue request

If the refund was already processed but bounced, for example because the account was closed, you raise a refund reissue request. Nothing in the ITR changes.

  1. First make sure at least one validated account is nominated for refund.
  2. Go to Services → Refund Reissue → Create Refund Reissue Request.
  3. Select the assessment year, then choose the bank account that should receive the money.
  4. E-verify with Aadhaar OTP, EVC or a DSC.
  5. Note the transaction ID. Track the request under View Refund Reissue Request. The steps are in the official refund reissue user manual.

Worked example: Priya filed her return claiming a refund of ₹18,400. Her old salary account was closed when she changed jobs. The intimation showed the refund as failed. She added her new savings account, waited about a week for validation, nominated it for refund, and then raised a reissue request. Her ITR stayed exactly as filed. Only the payout account changed.

Updating address, email and mobile number

The department sends intimations, notices and OTPs to the contact details in your profile. Keeping them current matters more than whatever address was printed in an old ITR.

If you have also moved house, update Aadhaar separately on the UIDAI website. Lenders and banks rely on Aadhaar-based KYC, and our Aadhaar guide explains how it affects loan applications.

When you actually need a revised return

A revised return is for mistakes in the content of the return: income you forgot, a wrong deduction, TDS you did not claim, or a wrong form. A wrong bank account alone is not a reason to revise.

What changed since 2022

Why accurate ITR details matter for loans

Your filed ITRs often act as income proof, especially if you are self-employed. Lenders compare the income in your ITR with bank statements, and the account you use should match. A clean, consistent record helps with loans for the self-employed using ITR and with business loan documentation.

Salaried borrowers mostly use salary slips, but lenders may still ask for Form 16 or two years of ITRs for larger amounts. See our personal loan eligibility and documents guide for what is typically asked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the bank account in my ITR after filing it?

Not inside the filed return. Add and pre-validate the new account under My Profile → My Bank Account and nominate it for refund. The refund goes to the nominated, validated account.

How long does bank account pre-validation take?

The portal says the status can take 10 to 12 working days. You get an SMS and email when it succeeds or fails.

My refund failed because the account was closed. What now?

Validate a working account, nominate it for refund, and raise a Refund Reissue request under Services. E-verify the request and track it with the transaction ID.

Do I need to file a revised return to change my address?

No. Update your address and contact details in My Profile. A revised return is only for errors in income, deductions or tax figures.

Can I nominate more than one account for refund?

Yes, more than one validated account can be nominated. Only one account can have EVC enabled at a time.

Does the Income-tax Act, 2025 change how I update bank details?

The e-filing portal process is the same. The new Act applies from 1 April 2026 and mainly changes terminology and section numbers, so check the current forms when you file.
