Short answer: Most banks and NBFCs use Aadhaar to complete KYC quickly, usually through OTP-based e-KYC, offline XML/QR verification or video KYC. Using Aadhaar for KYC is voluntary; a lender should accept other officially valid documents such as a passport, driving licence or voter ID, though the process may be slower. Keep your mobile number linked to Aadhaar, link PAN with Aadhaar, and never share OTPs or your full Aadhaar with unknown apps or callers.

This hub explains how Aadhaar is used in loan applications in 2026, how to protect it, and where to go next on FundsTiger for related topics such as PAN, credit reports and EPF.

How lenders use Aadhaar

When you apply for a personal, business or gold loan, the lender must verify your identity and address under RBI’s KYC rules. Aadhaar can be used in several ways:

MethodHow it worksWhat you share
Aadhaar OTP e-KYCYou enter Aadhaar or a Virtual ID and an OTP sent to your registered mobile; UIDAI shares your demographic data and photo with the lenderAadhaar number or VID, OTP
Offline verification (XML or QR)You download a digitally signed file or show the QR code; the lender verifies UIDAI’s signature without calling UIDAISigned file with share code, or QR on e-Aadhaar
Video KYC (V-CIP)A live video call with the lender’s official, usually combined with Aadhaar offline data or e-KYC and PANFace on camera, original documents
Biometric e-KYCFingerprint or iris at a branch or agent’s deviceBiometric, in person
Physical copyA self-attested copy, ideally maskedMasked Aadhaar showing only last 4 digits

Lenders also check your PAN, which must be linked with Aadhaar. An unlinked PAN can become inoperative, which can hold up loan disbursal, ITR filing and investments. The Income Tax Department’s guide explains how to link PAN and Aadhaar; a late fee applies if you missed the deadline.

Is Aadhaar mandatory for a loan?

No. Aadhaar is one of several officially valid documents for KYC, and giving it to a bank or NBFC is voluntary. In practice, fully digital loans almost always rely on Aadhaar e-KYC because it is fast and cheap to verify. If you do not want to use Aadhaar, ask for branch or video KYC with a passport, driving licence, voter ID or NREGA job card instead. Some government schemes and subsidies do require Aadhaar to receive the benefit.

Keep your Aadhaar loan-ready

  1. Mobile linked: OTP e-KYC fails without a working registered mobile number. Updating it needs a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre.
  2. Name and date of birth match PAN: mismatches between Aadhaar, PAN and bank records are a common reason for e-KYC failure or loan rejection.
  3. Address up to date: update it online with supporting documents through the myAadhaar service listed on UIDAI’s website. UIDAI has repeatedly extended the free online document update window; check the current fee before you start.
  4. Biometrics current: children need mandatory biometric updates at ages 5 and 15; UIDAI says these are free for ages 5 to 17 until 30 September 2027.
  5. Email added: useful for alerts whenever your Aadhaar is authenticated.

Protecting Aadhaar from loan fraud

Fraudsters use stolen Aadhaar and PAN copies to take loans in other people’s names, often through small app loans. Simple steps reduce the risk:

Before you give Aadhaar to a loan app, confirm it is linked to an RBI-regulated lender. Our step-by-step guide on how to check whether a loan app is RBI-approved uses RBI’s own directory of digital lending apps.

Worked example: where Aadhaar errors cost money

Illustrative: Arjun applies for a ₹2,00,000 personal loan. His Aadhaar shows ‘Arjun K’ while his PAN and bank account say ‘Arjun Kumar’. The lender’s name-match check fails and the application is put on hold. Arjun misses a discounted offer at 14% and ends up with a later offer at 16% over 36 months. The EMI difference is about ₹196 a month (roughly ₹6,835 versus ₹7,031), or about ₹7,000 over the loan. Fixing the name mismatch before applying would have avoided this. Use the personal loan EMI calculator to see such differences yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can a loan be taken on just an Aadhaar card?

Not by itself. Aadhaar proves identity and address, but lenders also need PAN and proof of income, and they check your credit report. Ads promising a loan on ‘only Aadhaar’ are often from unregulated apps.

Is it safe to give Aadhaar to a loan app?

Only to apps linked to an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC. Verify the app in RBI’s digital lending app directory, read its privacy policy, and prefer offline verification or a Virtual ID where offered.

My Aadhaar mobile number is lost. Can I still complete KYC?

OTP e-KYC will not work. You can use video KYC with other documents, visit a branch, or update the mobile number at an Aadhaar centre first.

Someone took a loan using my Aadhaar. What should I do?

Report it to the lender in writing, file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, and raise a dispute with the credit bureau showing the loan. If the lender does not resolve it within 30 days, you can approach the RBI Ombudsman.

Does Aadhaar e-KYC affect my credit score?

No. KYC verification is separate from a credit enquiry. Your score is affected only when a lender pulls your credit report for a loan application.
