Short answer: Choose paint colours by starting with what won’t change (flooring, furniture, light), picking a main neutral and one or two accents, and testing large samples on the actual wall in morning and evening light before you buy. Match the finish to the room, washable for kitchens and children’s rooms, and pick exterior and damp-proof products suited to your climate. Budget for surface preparation and labour, which often cost as much as the paint itself.

Repainting is one of the most common home upgrades in India, usually before a festival, a wedding, moving in, or after the monsoon. This guide covers how to choose colours that work, which finish to use where, and how to plan the cost.

Step 1: Start with what stays

Before looking at shade cards, list the fixed elements in each room: floor tiles or marble, wooden doors and wardrobes, sofas and curtains you are keeping, and the kitchen counter. Paint is the easiest thing to change, so it should work around these, not the other way round. Take a photo of each room and keep a small tile or fabric sample with you while choosing.

Step 2: Understand your light

Step 3: Use a simple colour scheme

A reliable approach is the 60-30-10 rule: about 60% of the room in a main colour (usually walls), 30% in a secondary colour (furniture, curtains, one feature wall), and 10% in an accent (cushions, art, a door).

SchemeHow it worksExample
Neutral with accentOff-white or greige walls, one bold feature wallWarm white walls, deep teal behind the bed
MonochromeSeveral shades of one colourPale sage walls, darker sage cabinets
ComplementaryColours opposite on the colour wheelSoft blue walls with terracotta accents
EarthyMuted warm tones that hide dustBeige, clay and olive

Step 4: Choose room by room

Step 5: Pick the right finish

FinishLookBest for
Matt / flatNo shine, hides wall imperfectionsCeilings, low-traffic bedrooms
Eggshell / satinSoft sheen, easier to wipeLiving rooms, bedrooms, corridors
Semi-gloss / glossShiny, most washableDoors, grills, kitchen and bathroom trims
TexturedPatterned surfaceFeature walls; harder to repaint later

Step 6: Test before you commit

  1. Shortlist two or three shades per room.
  2. Buy tester packs and paint patches at least A3 size on two different walls.
  3. Look at them in the morning, afternoon and at night for two or three days.
  4. Check them next to your floor and furniture, not just next to each other.
  5. Choose the slightly lighter option if unsure; colours look darker over a whole wall.

The money side: planning the cost

Paint is only part of the bill. A typical repaint includes:

Illustrative estimate (not a quote): painters often estimate wall area as roughly 3 to 3.5 times the carpet area. For a 900 sq ft flat, that is about 2,700 to 3,200 sq ft of paintable surface. If the all-in rate quoted by your contractor is, say, ₹20 per sq ft for an interior repaint with one coat of putty touch-up, primer and two coats of emulsion, the job would cost roughly ₹54,000 to ₹64,000. Actual rates depend on your city, the product and the wall condition, so get at least three written quotes listing brand, product, number of coats and what preparation is included.

Ways to keep the cost down

How people fund a repaint

Most households pay for a repaint from savings; setting aside a monthly amount for home maintenance makes it painless. Use the simple savings calculator to plan. If painting is part of a larger renovation (waterproofing, flooring, kitchen), some people use a home renovation loan or a top-up on an existing home loan, which is usually cheaper than an unsecured loan. Compare the EMI and total interest first; the EMI on a ₹1 lakh loan page gives a quick sense of costs for small amounts. Our home loan hub explains top-up loans.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a colour for a small room?

Use a light shade with slight warmth, keep the ceiling white or a shade lighter, and use darker colours only for accents.

Which paint finish is easiest to clean?

Satin, semi-gloss and gloss finishes are the most washable. Many brands also offer washable emulsions in a low-sheen look.

How often should interior walls be repainted?

It depends on the paint quality, damp and wear. Many households repaint every few years; high-traffic areas may need touch-ups sooner.

How many coats of paint are needed?

Usually a primer and two finish coats on a prepared surface. A big colour change, from dark to light, may need an extra coat.

Is it worth paying more for premium paint?

For kitchens, children’s rooms and exterior walls, better washability and weather resistance often pay off. For low-use rooms, a mid-range product is usually enough.
