How a loan against mutual funds works
- You pledge (lien-mark) fund units or shares with the lender, usually by OTP through CAMS, KFintech or MF Central.
- You get an overdraft or credit line and pay interest only on what you use.
- Your investments stay invested; you keep gains and dividends.
- If markets fall, your limit falls too. You may have to repay or pledge more within days, or the lender can sell pledged units.
- Lenders bar using the money to buy shares or for speculation.

Before you apply
- Check which of your holdings are on the lender’s approved list and the LTV for each type.
- Compare the processing fee on the whole limit and any yearly renewal fee, not just the rate.
- Keep a buffer: if markets fall, you may have to repay or pledge more within days, or the lender can sell your units.
- Use it for personal needs only. Lenders do not allow these loans to be used to buy shares or for speculation.
- Read the KFS: it must show the APR, every charge and how margin shortfalls are handled.

Frequently asked questions
Is a loan against mutual funds cheaper than a personal loan?
Usually. Rates start around 9.5% to 11.5%, compared with 10% to 30% or more for unsecured personal loans, and you pay interest only on what you use.
Why borrow instead of selling my funds?
Selling can lock in a loss after a weak market or trigger capital gains tax. Borrowing keeps you invested, but you pay interest and take on margin-call risk.
How much can I borrow against equity funds?
Banks can lend up to 75% against equity funds under RBI rules, but most lend 45% to 50%; debt funds get 75% to 90%.
