Here’s an uncomfortable equation: India’s flagship government loan portal reported a 43.2% rejection rate this year — and behind every rejection is a person who still needs the money. Scammers know this arithmetic better than anyone. Desperate borrowers are their entire business model. The good news: nearly all of them fail the same handful of checks.

The 60-Second Check (Run It Every Time)

✅ 1. Who is the regulated lender? Only banks and RBI-registered NBFCs can lend. Every legitimate app or platform must name its regulated lending partner — on the listing, the website, and the agreement. No named regulated entity = walk away. Verify NBFC registration on the RBI website’s published lists.

✅ 2. Any money asked before money given? Legitimate lenders deduct fees from the disbursal or through the documented loan account — they never ask you to pay ₹2,999 by UPI to “release” a loan, “verify” an account, pay “GST on the sanction,” or refund an “excess” disbursal. Advance-fee demands are India’s most common loan fraud. Any upfront payment demand = scam. No exceptions.

✅ 3. Is approval “guaranteed”? No one can guarantee loan approval — not an agent, an app, or a “bank insider.” The word “guaranteed” in a loan pitch is a confession, not a promise.

✅ 4. What permissions does the app want? A lending app needs KYC and consented financial data. It does not need your contact list, photo gallery, or message history — apps demanding those are building a harassment toolkit. Deny, uninstall, report.

✅ 5. Where did this offer come from? A random WhatsApp/Telegram message, a shady SMS link, a “5 minutes, no documents, no CIBIL” ad — hostile until proven otherwise. Real lenders don’t beg strangers.

The Scam Catalogue

The advance-fee artist: “Your ₹5 lakh is approved! Pay ₹4,500 processing to release it.” You pay; they invent another fee; they vanish. The fake app twin: a clone mimicking a real lender’s name and logo, harvesting KYC for identity fraud — download only via the lender’s own website link, check the developer name. The “CIBIL repair” agent: “₹10,000 and we delete your defaults in a week” — accurate history cannot be deleted by anyone; real repair takes 90 days of real behaviour. The harassment lender: instant micro-loans at brutal rates, contact-list permissions, threats within days. The screen-share “verifier”: a “bank officer” asking you to install screen-sharing or read out an OTP — no legitimate lender ever asks for OTPs, passwords, or screen access. Ever.

Digital Lending Rules That Protect You

RBI’s digital lending framework gives you enforceable protections: disbursal and repayment must flow directly between your bank account and the regulated lender’s — never through an agent’s personal account or an unknown wallet; you must receive a Key Fact Statement showing the annualised cost (APR) and all fees before you sign; lending-service-provider fees are the lender’s cost, not a side charge to you; a cooling-off period lets you exit a digital loan early; and grievances escalate from the lender’s grievance officer to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in). A lender who follows these rules is never offended by your checking. One who is offended has answered your question.

If You’ve Already Been Caught

  1. Stop paying. Further “fees” recover nothing.
  2. Call 1930 (national cyber-fraud helpline) and file at cybercrime.gov.in — speed matters; early reports can freeze money in transit.
  3. Tell your bank immediately if you shared account details or OTPs — block and reissue.
  4. Predatory app has your contacts/photos? Revoke permissions, uninstall, report it on the store, and pre-warn close contacts that any shameful messages are a known scam pattern. Harassment and morphing are crimes — include them in your report.
  5. Don’t let shame delay you. These operations are industrial; reporting fast is the strong move.

The deepest protection is removing the desperation scammers feed on: know your real affordability before you need money, keep your application bank-ready, and compare only among regulated lenders. (Our earlier scam guide covers more classic patterns.)
