Here’s a number that should change how you apply for your next loan: 43.2%. That’s the rejection rate reported on JanSamarth — the government’s flagship credit portal — in FY26, even as 13.1 million applications were sanctioned. And the Union Finance Ministry’s own diagnosis of why applications fail is striking. The top three causes are not “bad borrowers”: incomplete documentation, incorrect or inconsistent information, and applicants abandoning the process after in-principle approval.
The lesson applies far beyond government schemes. Whether you’re applying to a bank, an NBFC, or a scheme portal: being eligible for a loan is not the same as being loan-ready. This is the complete pre-application audit — so your next application is your last one.
Why “Eligible” Borrowers Still Get Rejected
Applications fail in five distinct ways: eligibility failure (you genuinely don’t meet criteria), documentation failure (missing pages, unreadable uploads, expired proofs), data-consistency failure (your declared income, bank credits and ITR tell three different stories), verification failure (employer unreachable, failed field visit), and customer drop-off (you got in-principle approval and went silent). Only the first is about you. The other four are about your application — and all four are fixable before you press submit.
The 7-Point Readiness Test
1. Identity consistency. Name, date of birth and address spelled identically across Aadhaar, PAN and bank account. “Md.” vs “Mohammed” or an old address on one document is enough to trip automated verification. Mobile must be Aadhaar-linked or OTP verification fails silently.
2. Income consistency. Salary slips, bank credits, declared income and tax records should reconcile. Declare ₹40,000/month while your account shows ₹22,000 in average credits, and the system flags concealment — even if the gap has an innocent explanation.
3. Employment or business verifiability. Salaried: is your employer findable, does HR respond? Business: do Udyam, GST and stated activity describe the same business? “Trading” on the form when Udyam says “manufacturing” is a classic silent killer.
4. Banking behaviour. Lenders read your statement like a character reference. Red flags: cheque/EMI bounces, unexplained large cash deposits, circular transfers, month-end balances hovering near zero. Six to twelve clean months matter more than one good month.
5. Credit-report accuracy. Pull your own report before any lender does (one free report per bureau per year). Check for forgotten overdues, loans marked “settled” instead of “closed”, duplicates, and an enquiry pile-up. Disputes take 30–45 days — do it before applying. (Low score? Start here.)
6. Repayment capacity. Monthly income − existing EMIs − essential expenses = surplus. Your proposed EMI should fit comfortably inside it. Run the FOIR eligibility calculator first — lenders run this math; running it first means requesting an amount that gets approved.
7. Document completeness. Every required page present, current, readable, in the format asked (authenticated PDF statements, not screenshots). Scheme loans add items people forget: project reports for PMEGP, training certificates, land records for KCC.
The “Do Not Apply Yet” Checklist
Pause your application if any of these is true: PAN/Aadhaar details don’t match; recent salary credits are missing from your statement; you haven’t disclosed every EMI; your credit report has an undisputed error; you don’t fully understand the product’s terms; or you’re planning to “apply everywhere and see” — multiple hard enquiries in a short window damage your score and signal desperation. Fixing these takes days. A rejection stays on your enquiry history much longer.
Beware: The Rejection Economy Has Predators
High rejection rates create a market for scams. Never pay anyone for “guaranteed approval” — no legitimate lender or agent can guarantee approval. Never share OTPs or passwords. Never alter salary slips or statements — it’s detectable fraud. And avoid expensive instant-loan apps while waiting on an application. (The common loan scams, and how to protect yourself.)
