Short answer: First pull your full credit report and find out exactly why the score is low: late payments, high card usage, a settled or written-off account, too many loan enquiries, or an error. Dispute anything that is wrong, bring every account current, cut card usage below about 30% of the limit, and stop applying for new credit for a few months. Accurate negative entries cannot be deleted, but their effect fades as you add months of on-time payments.

What counts as a “low” CIBIL score?

A CIBIL score runs from 300 to 900. Lenders set their own cut-offs, but the bands below are a practical guide to how applications are usually treated in 2026:

Score rangeHow lenders usually see itWhat to expect
750–900Low riskWidest choice, better rates
700–749AcceptableMost mainstream lenders will consider you
650–699BorderlineFewer offers, higher rates, more documents
550–649High riskMostly secured loans or specialised lenders
Below 550, or NH/-1Very high risk, or no historySecured credit first; build a track record

“NH” or “-1” is not a bad score. It simply means you have no recent credit history, which is a different problem with a different fix. Our CIBIL report guide explains each section of the report.

Step 1: Get your full report from every bureau

India has four credit bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. RBI requires each of them to give you one free full credit report every calendar year. CIBIL’s version is at cibil.com/freecibilscore.

Pull all four. A lender may report to one bureau and not another, and an error that appears in only one report can still sink an application with a lender that uses that bureau. Our guide to all four credit reports shows where to get each one.

Step 2: Diagnose the cause

Read the account section line by line. These are the usual culprits, roughly in order of impact:

If the drop was sudden, compare against our list of common reasons for a fast CIBIL downgrade.

Step 3: Dispute only what is wrong

If you find an error, raise a dispute with the bureau online and, in parallel, write to the lender with proof (a closure letter or NOC, bank statement showing payment, or a police complaint if it is identity theft). Our CIBIL dispute guide walks through the forms.

RBI rules give these complaints teeth. Under RBI’s compensation framework for credit information, the lender has 21 calendar days to send corrected data to the bureau, and the bureau must resolve the complaint within 30 calendar days. If it is not resolved in time, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per calendar day of delay. If the lender or bureau rejects a genuine complaint, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which covers credit bureaus too.

Be clear about the limit here: accurate late payments, settlements and write-offs cannot be removed by anyone. Agencies that promise to “delete” true entries or guarantee a 100-point jump are not being honest with you.

Step 4: Repair the habits that drive the score

  1. Bring everything current. Pay any overdue EMI or card bill first. An account that stays overdue keeps adding fresh DPD every month.
  2. Automate payments. Set up auto-debit for at least the minimum due on cards and for every EMI, a few days after salary credit.
  3. Cut utilisation. If your card limit is ₹1,00,000 and you carry ₹85,000, paying it down to ₹25,000 moves utilisation from 85% to 25%. That change usually shows within one or two billing cycles.
  4. Pause new applications. Each hard enquiry is recorded. Wait three to six months before applying again, and when you do, check eligibility first.
  5. Keep old cards open if they have no annual fee. Their age and unused limit help.
  6. Settle carefully. If an old loan is unpaid, try to pay it in full to get a “closed” status. If you can only settle, ask in writing for the option to pay the balance later and get the status updated.

How long does it take?

ProblemTypical time to see improvement
Wrong entry correctedWithin about a month of a successful dispute
High card utilisation reducedOne to two billing cycles
Several recent enquiriesA few months, as they age
Missed EMIs, now currentSix to twelve months of clean payments
Settled or written-off accountSeveral years; impact softens with time and new good history

These are typical patterns, not promises. Every report is different, and each bureau uses its own model.

Borrowing while your score is low

If you need money before the score recovers, the cost of a low score shows up in the interest rate. On a ₹2,00,000 loan over 24 months, the EMI at 14% a year is about ₹9,603 and total interest about ₹30,500. At 24% the EMI rises to about ₹10,574 and interest to about ₹53,800. At 30% it is about ₹11,183 and ₹68,400.

So borrow less and for a shorter period, prefer secured options (gold, fixed deposit, mutual funds) where the rate is lower, and borrow only from RBI-regulated lenders. Check the Key Facts Statement and the APR before signing. Our hub on loans for a low credit score and the page on a personal loan with a CIBIL score of 600 explain what is realistic.

Check offers from RBI-regulated lenders that consider borrowers with lower scores, before you apply anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Can a low CIBIL score be fixed quickly?

Errors can be corrected within about a month of a successful dispute, and lower card utilisation shows up within a billing cycle or two. Recovery from genuine late payments, settlements or write-offs takes months to years of on-time payments. No one can guarantee a specific score jump.

Does checking my own CIBIL score reduce it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not affect it. Only enquiries made by lenders when you apply for credit are counted.

Can I get a loan with a CIBIL score below 650?

Some lenders consider such applications, usually with higher rates, smaller amounts or security such as gold or a fixed deposit. Approval depends on income, existing EMIs and the lender’s own policy.

What if a loan in my report is not mine?

Dispute it with the bureau and the lender, and file a cybercrime complaint if you suspect identity theft. Under RBI rules the complaint should be resolved within 30 days, with ₹100 per day compensation for delays.

Will paying off a settled loan improve my score?

Paying the remaining amount and getting the status changed from settled to closed helps future lenders’ view of you. The past late-payment history remains, but it carries less weight over time.
