Short answer: A secured loan is backed by an asset you pledge, such as gold, property, a fixed deposit, shares or mutual funds. Because the lender’s risk is lower, secured loans usually come with lower interest rates, higher amounts, longer tenures and easier approval than unsecured personal loans, even if your credit score is modest. The trade-off is that you can lose the asset if you do not repay, so borrow only what you can service.

When you need money, the choice is often between an unsecured personal loan and a loan against something you already own. This guide explains the real advantages of secured loans in 2026, the risks, the RBI rules that protect you, and a worked ₹ example that shows how much the choice can matter.
What counts as a secured loan?
| Type | Collateral | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Home loan | The house being bought | Buying or building a home |
| Loan against property (LAP) | Residential or commercial property you own | Business, education, large expenses |
| Gold loan | Gold jewellery or coins | Short-term needs, emergencies, farming, small business |
| Loan against mutual funds or shares | Units or shares lien-marked in your demat or folio | Short-term liquidity without selling investments |
| Loan or overdraft against fixed deposit | Your FD | Short-term needs at a small margin over the FD rate |
| Vehicle loan | The car or two-wheeler (hypothecated) | Buying a vehicle |
An unsecured loan, such as a personal loan or credit card, has no collateral; the lender relies only on your income and credit history. Our unsecured personal loans guide covers that side.
The main advantages of a secured loan
1. Lower interest rates
Collateral reduces the lender’s expected loss, and that usually shows up as a lower rate. Home loans and loans against FDs are typically among the cheapest forms of credit, while personal loans and credit card debt cost much more. See current ranges on our gold loan rate comparison and loan against mutual funds rate comparison.
2. Larger loan amounts
The amount depends on the value of what you pledge, not only on your salary. A property can support a loan many times your annual income, which an unsecured lender would rarely offer.
3. Longer tenures and smaller EMIs
Home loans can run for up to 20–30 years and loans against property for 15 years or more, which keeps the EMI manageable. Personal loans usually run for one to five years.
4. Easier approval with a thin or damaged credit history
Lenders still check your credit report, but a gold loan or loan against FD is often available to first-time borrowers or people rebuilding credit. Repaying it on time adds positive history. If your score is low, read our loans for low credit score hub before applying anywhere.
5. Your investments keep working
With a loan against mutual funds or shares, you keep the investment and its potential growth instead of selling it in a hurry, and you avoid triggering capital gains tax at a bad time. Use the loan against mutual funds calculator to see how much you could borrow.
6. Flexible repayment options
Gold loans often allow interest-only payments with the principal repaid at the end, and loans against securities are often run as an overdraft where you pay interest only on what you use.
Worked example: ₹3 lakh for three years
Assume you need ₹3,00,000 and will repay in 36 monthly EMIs. The rates below are illustrative, not quotes.
| Option | Illustrative rate | EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold loan (EMI basis) | 10% | ₹9,680 | ₹48,486 |
| Personal loan, good profile | 16% | ₹10,547 | ₹79,696 |
| Personal loan, weaker profile | 24% | ₹11,770 | ₹1,23,715 |
The secured option saves about ₹31,000 compared with a 16% personal loan, and about ₹75,000 compared with a 24% loan, on the same amount. Check your own figures with the gold loan calculator or the personal loan EMI calculator.
RBI rules that protect secured borrowers in 2026
- Gold loan limits: RBI’s directions on lending against gold and silver collateral, fully effective from 1 April 2026, cap the loan-to-value ratio for consumption loans at 85% for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% for ₹2.5–5 lakh and 75% above ₹5 lakh. Lenders must return pledged gold within seven working days of full repayment or pay compensation for the delay.
- No prepayment charges on many floating-rate loans: under RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025, floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes sanctioned from 1 January 2026, including most home loans, cannot carry prepayment charges.
- Transparent pricing: lenders must give a Key Facts Statement with the annual percentage rate and all charges; digital loans also come with a cooling-off period under the Digital Lending Directions, 2025.
- Return of documents: property documents must be returned promptly after closure. See how to close a loan and get an NOC.

The disadvantages you must weigh
- You can lose the asset. If you default, the lender can auction the gold, sell pledged securities or, for property, start recovery proceedings after due notice.
- Margin calls on market-linked collateral. If shares or fund values fall, you may have to top up or repay part of the loan quickly; see our loan against shares calculator.
- Extra costs. Valuation, legal checks, stamp duty and registration add to the cost of property-backed loans.
- Slower processing for property loans, compared with a pre-approved personal loan.
- Emotional value. Family gold or a home has value beyond money; think carefully before putting it at risk for discretionary spending.
Secured vs unsecured: a quick comparison
| Factor | Secured loan | Unsecured loan |
|---|---|---|
| Interest rate | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Amount | Linked to asset value | Linked to income and score |
| Tenure | Up to 20–30 years for home loans | Usually 1–5 years |
| Approval with low score | Easier | Harder |
| Risk if you default | Loss of asset plus credit damage | Credit damage, collection action |
| Speed | Gold and FD loans fast; property slow | Often fast |
Is a secured loan right for you?
A secured loan tends to make sense when you need a larger amount or a longer tenure, when you have an asset you are comfortable pledging, and when your income can comfortably cover the EMI. It is less suitable for small discretionary purchases, or if any interruption in income would make you miss payments. Before you decide, compare the total cost with the flat vs reducing rate guide in mind, because some gold and vehicle loans are quoted on a flat rate.
Frequently asked questions
Is a secured loan always cheaper than a personal loan?
Usually, but not always. A strong salaried borrower may get a personal loan rate close to some secured products, and secured loans can carry valuation and legal charges. Compare the APR in each Key Facts Statement.
Does a gold loan affect my CIBIL score?
Yes. Most gold loans are reported to credit bureaus. Paying on time builds your history, while delays or an auction are recorded as negative events.
How much gold loan can I get in 2026?
Under RBI’s directions effective 1 April 2026, consumption gold loans can be up to 85% of the gold’s value for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% for ₹2.5–5 lakh and 75% above ₹5 lakh.
What happens if I cannot repay a secured loan?
The lender will first charge disclosed penal charges and report the delay. Continued default can lead to sale of the collateral after notice. Contact the lender early to discuss a revised schedule.
Can I prepay a secured loan without charges?
Floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes sanctioned from 1 January 2026 cannot carry prepayment charges. For fixed-rate loans, charges depend on the lender’s disclosed policy.
