Short answer: There is no single best bank for a current account; the right one depends on how much cash you handle, your average balance, how often you transact and whether you will need credit from that bank later. Compare the minimum average balance, free cash-deposit limit, charges per transaction, digital banking quality and branch access. Large private and public sector banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, SBI and Bank of Baroda all offer several current account variants, so shortlist the variant that fits your business, not just the bank.

Last updated: 13 October 2026.

Our earlier versions of this article (2022 and 2023) listed six banks. Account names, balance requirements and charges change every year, and an RBI rule change effective 1 April 2026 affects which bank larger borrowers can keep their current account with. So instead of a ranking that goes stale, this 2026 guide gives you a way to choose, with a worked cost comparison.

What a current account is for

A current account is a transaction account for businesses, professionals and traders. Unlike a savings account it usually pays no interest, but it allows a high number of transactions, large cash deposits, cheque books, business payments and collections. Lenders also read your current account statement when you apply for a business loan, so a well-run account helps your credit profile.

RBI rule change from 1 April 2026

The Reserve Bank of India has revised its framework on which banks may maintain current and overdraft accounts for borrowers. Under the revised rules effective 1 April 2026 (banks could adopt them earlier):

For most small businesses and professionals, this means you can bank wherever you like. If your business has large borrowings, check with your lenders before opening a current account elsewhere.

What to compare before you choose

  1. Average balance requirement: monthly or quarterly, and the penalty for falling short.
  2. Free cash deposit limit: usually stated as an amount per month or a multiple of your balance. Charges beyond that are typically per ₹1,000 deposited.
  3. Cash at non-home branches: often charged separately.
  4. Free transactions: NEFT/RTGS, cheque leaves, demand drafts.
  5. Digital tools: business net banking with maker-checker approvals, bulk payments, GST and tax payments, accounting software integration, UPI QR and sound box for collections.
  6. Branch and ATM access near your business, especially if you deposit cash.
  7. Credit relationship: cash credit, card machines and overdraft facilities are easier to get from a bank that already sees your cash flow.
  8. Sweep facility: some banks move surplus balance into deposits so it earns interest.

Worked example: which account costs less?

Consider a grocery shop (illustrative) that deposits ₹6 lakh in cash every month and can keep about ₹25,000 in the account on average. Two hypothetical accounts:

Account AAccount B
Minimum average balance₹10,000₹50,000
Free cash deposit per month₹2 lakh₹10 lakh
Charge beyond free limit₹4 per ₹1,000₹4 per ₹1,000
Monthly cash charge on ₹6 lakh₹4 lakh × ₹4/₹1,000 = ₹1,600Nil
Penalty for balance shortfallNil (₹25,000 is above ₹10,000)Possible penalty, as ₹25,000 is below ₹50,000
Approximate annual cost₹19,200 plus GSTDepends on penalty; or park ₹25,000 more

If the shop can keep ₹50,000 on average, Account B saves about ₹19,200 a year. The extra ₹25,000 parked in the account loses perhaps ₹1,500–₹1,800 of annual interest it could earn elsewhere, so B is clearly cheaper. If the shop cannot keep the higher balance, Account A with lower charges is better. These numbers are illustrative; use each bank’s actual schedule of charges.

The six banks from our earlier list

Our 2023 article covered HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda and Axis Bank. All six still offer a range of current accounts, from low-balance to premium and trader variants, along with business net banking and credit facilities. Rather than rank them, shortlist two or three that have branches near you, then ask each for the schedule of charges of the specific variant you are considering. Write down the minimum balance, free cash limit, charge per ₹1,000 beyond it, and charges for non-home branch deposits, then run the same arithmetic as in the example above. Small private banks, small finance banks and cooperative banks can also be worth a look, especially if they offer better local service.

Documents you will need
