Short answer: Bill or invoice discounting lets a business get cash today against invoices its customers will pay later, minus a discount (the financier’s charge). For MSMEs, the RBI-regulated TReDS platforms are the most structured route: invoices accepted by a buyer are auctioned to banks and NBFCs, and the MSME is paid without recourse, so if the buyer defaults, the financier bears the loss. The cost depends mainly on the buyer’s credit strength, not yours.

How bill discounting works

Suppose you supply goods worth ₹10,00,000 to a large company on 90-day credit. Instead of waiting three months, you present the invoice (or a bill of exchange accepted by the buyer) to a bank, NBFC or TReDS platform. The financier pays you most of the invoice value now and collects the full amount from the buyer on the due date. The difference is the discount, which works like interest for the period.

TReDS in 2026: what MSMEs should know

RBI issued the Reserve Bank of India (Trade Receivables Discounting System) Directions, 2026 on 23 June 2026, replacing the 2014 guidelines and later updates. Key points:

Several RBI-authorised platforms operate, including RXIL (set up by SIDBI and NSE), M1xchange and Invoicemart. In addition, the Ministry of MSME required companies with turnover above ₹250 crore to onboard TReDS, which has widened the pool of buyers an MSME can discount against.

Worked example: what discounting costs

Illustrative figures. An MSME has a ₹10,00,000 invoice payable in 90 days by a well-rated buyer. A financier on TReDS bids a discount rate of 9% a year.

ItemCalculationAmount
Invoice value₹10,00,000
Discount for 90 days at 9% a year₹10,00,000 × 9% × 90/365₹22,192
Platform fee (example)Varies by platform; check its schedulesay ₹1,000 + GST
Cash received todayInvoice value minus discount and fees≈ ₹9,76,600
Paid by buyer on day 90To the financier₹10,00,000

Compare this with an unsecured business loan at, say, 18% a year: the same ₹10 lakh for 90 days would cost about ₹44,000 in interest. Discounting is cheaper here because the risk is the large buyer’s, not the MSME’s. If the buyer is weaker or unrated, bids will be higher or may not come at all.

Is it right for your business?

Works well whenThink twice when
You sell to large, creditworthy buyers on 30–180 day termsYour buyers are small or pay irregularly
Your working capital is locked in receivablesMargins are thin and cannot absorb the discount
You want finance without adding collateral or debt on your balance sheetYour invoices are often disputed or partially paid
Buyers are already on TReDSYou need long-term funds for machinery or expansion

For longer-term or asset needs, compare a term loan or overdraft. Our business loans hub, types of business loans and short-term business loan guide explain the options, and overdraft loans covers flexible limits.

Getting started

  1. Register on the Udyam portal (free). MSME status is required to sell on TReDS.
  2. Keep GST-compliant invoices, a current account and KYC documents ready; see our business loan documents list.
  3. Ask your main buyers whether they are on TReDS and which platform they use.
  4. Onboard as a seller, upload invoices, get buyer acceptance and review bids before accepting.
  5. Track every discounted invoice against bank credits so your books stay clean.

Also remember that the MSMED Act requires buyers to pay micro and small suppliers within the agreed period, which cannot exceed 45 days, or pay compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate for delays. The income-tax law has also restricted buyers’ deductions for overdue payments to micro and small enterprises; check the current provision under the Income-tax Act, 2025 with your tax adviser (see our income tax hub).

Frequently asked questions

Is bill discounting a loan?

It is a form of credit, but it is secured by a specific receivable. On TReDS, it is without recourse to the MSME seller, so if the buyer does not pay, the financier cannot recover the amount from the seller.

Who can sell invoices on TReDS?

Only MSMEs as defined under the MSMED Act, 2006. Buyers can be corporates, PSUs, government departments and other entities that owe money to MSMEs.

What decides the discount rate?

Mainly the buyer’s credit quality, the tenure of the invoice, and competition between financiers bidding on the platform. Strong buyers attract lower rates.

Does discounting show up in my CIBIL report?

Bank bill discounting limits are credit facilities and are typically reported to commercial credit bureaus. Non-recourse TReDS transactions are linked to the buyer’s obligation; ask your platform or bank how they report.

How fast is the money credited?

Once a bid is accepted, funds usually reach the seller’s account within a short settlement cycle, often the next working day, depending on the platform.
