Short answer: A medical equipment loan is a business loan used to buy diagnostic, surgical, dental or hospital equipment, usually repaid in EMIs over 3 to 7 years with the equipment itself as security. Banks and NBFCs lend to doctors, clinics, labs, diagnostic centres and hospitals; the rate, amount and collateral needed depend on your qualifications, practice income, credit score and the equipment’s cost. Registered micro and small enterprises may also get collateral-free loans backed by the CGTMSE guarantee scheme.

Whether you are a dentist buying a chair and an RVG sensor, a radiologist adding a CT scanner, or a pathology lab automating its analysers, equipment is usually the biggest cheque you write. Few practices pay for it in cash. This guide explains how medical equipment financing works in India in 2026, what lenders look for, what it really costs, and how to check whether the purchase pays for itself.

What can you finance?

Types of medical equipment finance

OptionHow it worksBest suited to
Equipment term loan (hypothecation)Lender pays the supplier; equipment is hypothecated until you repayMost single-equipment purchases

Collateral-free route: CGTMSE

The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) guarantees loans that member banks and lenders give to micro and small enterprises without collateral or third-party guarantees. As per the CGTMSE website, the ceiling for guarantee coverage has been raised to ₹10 crore. Your lender pays (and usually passes on) an annual guarantee fee.

To use it, your clinic, lab or centre generally needs to be a registered enterprise. Udyam registration is free, Aadhaar-based and paperless. Many doctors run their practice as a proprietorship and register it under Udyam before applying. Read more about schemes like this in our government loan schemes guide.

Who is eligible?

Each lender has its own policy, but these are the usual checks:

The paperwork is similar to any business loan: KYC, degree and registration certificates, clinic address proof, ITRs with computation, 6 to 12 months of bank statements, GST returns if registered, and the supplier’s proforma invoice. Our checklist of documents required for business loans covers the details.

What does a medical equipment loan cost?

Rates vary widely with the lender, your profile, the security and the equipment, so get written quotes rather than relying on advertised “starting from” rates. Look beyond the interest rate at:

Compare offers using the flat vs reducing rate guide and check the EMI with our EMI calculator.

Worked example: will the machine pay for itself?

Dr. Anjali (an illustrative example) runs a gynaecology clinic and wants a ₹25 lakh ultrasound machine. She borrows the full ₹25 lakh at 12% a year on a reducing balance for 5 years.

ItemAmount
Loan amount₹25,00,000
Interest rate / tenure12% / 60 months
Monthly EMIabout ₹55,600
Total interest over 5 yearsabout ₹8,37,000
Scans needed to cover EMI at ₹900 net per scanabout 62 a month (roughly 2–3 a working day)

If her current referrals send out 150 scans a month that she could do in-house, the machine covers its EMI comfortably, even after a technician’s salary and maintenance. If demand is only 40 scans a month, the purchase strains her cash flow and a smaller or refurbished machine, a longer tenure or a lease may be wiser. Do this arithmetic before you sign. Remember to include the annual maintenance contract, consumables, staff, power and regulatory costs (for example, registrations needed for radiology or ultrasound equipment).

Tax angle

For a practice or business, interest on a loan used for the profession and depreciation on the equipment are generally deductible business expenses. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 and section numbers have changed, so confirm the current depreciation rates and treatment with your chartered accountant. GST paid on equipment may or may not be claimable, depending on whether your services are taxable; most healthcare services are exempt, so many doctors cannot claim input credit.

Tips to get approved on better terms

  1. File ITRs on time and show your real practice income; lenders rely on it.
  2. Keep clinic receipts flowing through a dedicated current account.
  3. Clear or reduce high-cost debt such as credit card balances before applying.
  4. Bring a margin of 10–20% of the cost if you can; it lowers the loan and the EMI.
  5. Get two or three quotes, and negotiate the fee and foreclosure terms, not just the rate.
  6. Match the tenure to the equipment’s useful life; do not take a 7-year loan for technology that will be obsolete in 4.

Frequently asked questions

Can a newly qualified doctor get a medical equipment loan?

Often yes, but lenders may ask for a co-applicant, a higher margin or start with a smaller amount. A CGTMSE-backed loan through a Udyam-registered practice is one collateral-free route.

Is collateral required?

The equipment is usually hypothecated to the lender. Additional collateral depends on the loan size and your profile. CGTMSE allows eligible micro and small enterprises to borrow without collateral, with coverage up to ₹10 crore.

Can I finance refurbished equipment?

Some lenders do, usually with a lower loan-to-value ratio and shorter tenure. Get a valuation and warranty from the supplier.

What is the typical tenure?

Commonly 3 to 7 years, depending on the equipment’s life and the amount.

Is interest on an equipment loan tax deductible?

For a practice, interest on a business loan and depreciation on equipment are generally deductible. Confirm the treatment under the Income-tax Act, 2025 with your CA.
