Medical Loan in India: Options, Costs and How to Apply Fast
Short answer: A medical loan is usually an unsecured personal loan used to pay hospital bills, surgery, treatment or medical devices not covered by insurance. Approval can be quick, but rates are higher than secured options. Before borrowing, use your health insurance (cashless or reimbursement), check whether you can withdraw from your EPF for treatment, and compare a personal loan with cheaper secured options such as a gold loan or a loan against a fixed deposit.

This guide explains the options for funding medical expenses in India in 2026, what each costs, how to apply quickly when time matters, and how to avoid expensive mistakes.
When a medical loan makes sense
- Your health insurance has a gap: a room-rent cap, co-payment, sub-limit, waiting period or an excluded treatment.
- You have no health insurance, or the sum insured is exhausted.
- The treatment is planned but not covered: IVF, dental implants, cosmetic correction after an accident, hearing aids or certain physiotherapy.
- A hospital needs an advance deposit before admission and the insurer’s pre-authorisation has not come through yet.
If the need is not urgent, a short delay to arrange a cheaper source often saves a lot. If it is an emergency, see our guide on emergency loans for the fastest legitimate routes.
Your funding options compared
| Option | Typical cost | Speed | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health insurance (cashless/reimbursement) | Premium already paid | Pre-authorisation can take hours | Room-rent caps, co-pay, sub-limits, documents |
| EPF partial withdrawal for illness | Lost future interest on the amount | Online claim; usually days | Only for specified illness/treatment; limits apply |
| Loan against fixed deposit or overdraft on FD | Usually 1–2% above the FD rate | Same day at your bank | Only up to a share of the FD |
| Gold loan | Lower than unsecured loans | Same day | Gold can be auctioned if you default |
| Unsecured personal / medical loan | Higher; depends on profile | Hours to a few days for strong profiles | Processing fee, APR, foreclosure terms |
| Hospital or credit card EMI plans | ‘No-cost’ EMI may hide fees | Instant if you have a card limit | Card interest is very high if you miss a payment |
Worked example: ₹2,00,000 for a surgery gap
Suppose your insurer pays most of a bill but leaves ₹2,00,000 unpaid because of a room-rent cap and co-pay.
- Personal loan at 15% for 24 months: EMI about ₹9,697; total interest about ₹32,700, plus any processing fee.
- Gold loan at a lower rate for 12 months with interest paid monthly: interest roughly ₹1,500–₹2,000 a month at common gold loan rates, with the ₹2,00,000 repaid at the end. Use the gold loan calculator to see how much your gold can raise.
- EPF withdrawal: no interest cost, but your retirement balance and its compounding are reduced.

Using your EPF for medical treatment
EPF members can make a partial withdrawal for the treatment of a serious illness of themselves or family members, subject to the scheme’s limits and documentation. Claims are filed online through the member portal after your Aadhaar-linked UAN is active and KYC is complete. Read our guide to types of EPF withdrawals and the EPFO hub, and file through the EPFO portal.
How to apply for a medical loan quickly
- Get a written estimate from the hospital and the insurer’s approved amount, so you borrow only the gap.
- Keep KYC ready: Aadhaar, PAN, last three months’ salary slips or recent ITR, and six months of bank statements.
- Check your credit report for errors; a clean report speeds approval.
- Apply to one or two lenders at a time; many simultaneous applications add hard enquiries.
- Read the Key Facts Statement: APR, fees, EMI date and foreclosure terms. Our explainer on APR vs interest rate shows what to look for.
- Ask whether the lender can pay the hospital directly if the hospital prefers that.
Eligibility basics are explained in personal loan eligibility criteria. If your score is low, see loans for a low credit score; avoid unknown apps that promise instant money without checks.

Planned treatments: budgeting before you borrow
For planned procedures such as IVF cycles, dental implants, knee replacement or cataract surgery, you usually have weeks to prepare. Ask the hospital for a package price in writing, including implants, consumables, medicines and follow-up visits, and check which parts your policy covers. Many treatments are paid in stages, so a loan or credit line drawn as needed may cost less than one lump sum taken on day one.
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the package price fixed or an estimate? | Estimates can rise during the stay; budget a margin of 10–20% |
| What does the insurer cover and what is the co-pay? | You borrow only the true gap |
| Does the lender pay the hospital or my account? | Direct payment avoids misuse and simplifies records |
| Can I prepay without charges once a claim reimbursement arrives? | Floating-rate individual loans have no prepayment charge; fixed-rate loans may |
If you expect an insurance reimbursement after discharge, plan to use it to prepay the loan immediately; this can cut the interest cost sharply.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paying upfront when cashless is available. Ask the hospital’s insurance desk first.
- Borrowing the full bill. Borrow only what insurance and savings cannot cover.
- Ignoring ‘no-cost’ EMI fine print. Processing fees and GST can make it costlier than it looks.
- Using a credit card and paying only the minimum. The interest on revolving card balances is among the highest in consumer credit.
- Unregulated lenders. Borrow only from RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs or apps that clearly name them.
Make the next emergency cheaper
- Buy adequate family floater health cover and consider a super top-up; read our insurance basics.
- Build a cash buffer with the emergency fund calculator.
- Check eligibility for government health cover such as Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for eligible families and senior citizens.
- Under the old tax regime, health insurance premiums and certain medical expenses for senior citizens can be deducted; check the current section under the Income-tax Act, 2025 before you file.
Health insurance claim rejected or short-paid?
Ask the insurer for the reason in writing and appeal through its grievance officer. If it is not resolved, you can register a complaint on IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal and, beyond that, approach the Insurance Ombudsman. If a lender mis-sells or overcharges you, complain to the lender and then under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
Frequently asked questions
Is a medical loan different from a personal loan?
Usually not. Most ‘medical loans’ are personal loans with a medical purpose. Some lenders or hospital partners offer EMI plans at the point of treatment.
How fast can I get a medical loan?
Pre-approved customers of a bank can get funds within hours; new applicants may need one to three working days, depending on documents and verification.
Can I get a medical loan with a low credit score?
Possibly, at a higher cost or with a co-applicant. A gold loan or a loan against an FD does not depend as much on your score.
Can I withdraw EPF for a family member’s treatment?
Yes, EPF allows partial withdrawal for treatment of the member or eligible family members, subject to limits and documents.
Is interest on a medical loan tax-deductible?
Generally no. Interest on a personal loan used for medical treatment is not a tax deduction for salaried individuals.
