We deep-clean the house before Diwali so Lakshmi finds it worthy. The balance sheet deserves the same broom. Ten days remain before Lakshmi Puja — enough, it turns out, to enter the new Samvat measurably lighter. One task a day:
Day 1: The Full List
Every debt on one page: card balances, app loans, EMIs, udhaar — outstanding, rate, minimum due. Most people have never seen their complete picture; seeing it is half the cure. (The credit dues calculator does the assembling.)
Day 2: Rank by Rate
Sort highest-rate first. Card revolving balances (36–42% p.a.) and instant-app loans top the kill list; the 9% home loan sits last, untouched.
Day 3: Find the Fuel
Bonus expected? Thirty percent of it is your prepayment ammunition. No bonus? Hunt one month of trimmable spends — the festive budget’s Vanity bucket usually hides it.
Day 4: Kill One Small Debt Entirely
The ₹6,000 app loan, the ₹4,500 hanging card balance — close one completely. The psychology of a finished debt funds the discipline for the bigger ones, and a cleared small overdue can lift your credit report within a cycle.
Day 5: Strike the Biggest Rate
Put the Day-3 fuel against your highest-rate balance. Prepaying ₹30,000 of 40% card debt “earns” ~₹12,000 over the next year — tax-free, guaranteed.
Day 6: The Consolidation Decision
If three-plus costly obligations remain, run the one math that matters: would one lower-rate loan replace them with an EMI your surplus comfortably covers? Calculate the savings, then read the complete consolidation guide — including when NOT to.
Day 7: Automate the Defences
Every remaining EMI and card bill on auto-debit, with a protected buffer. A bounce during festive weeks is the most expensive diya you’ll never light.
Day 8: Close the Taps
Reduce limits on cards that got you here; delete saved card details from shopping apps; uninstall the instant-loan apps. Access removed is temptation removed.
Day 9: Write the Samvat Plan
One line per remaining debt: “Closed by ___.” Put the dates where the family can see them — Lakshmi leaves the quarrelsome, secretive house; she stays where the books are open.
Day 10: Light the Lamp Over a Lighter Ledger
Whatever you cleared — ₹5,000 or ₹50,000 — you enter Samvat 2083 carrying less than you did ten days ago. That’s not symbolism. That’s compounding, reversed in your favour.
Make Day 6 Count
- 💳 Credit card balance transfer — if card dues dominate
- ⚡ Full consolidation options from banks and RBI-registered NBFCs
