Somewhere between Dussehra and Diwali, a happy SMS lands: your bonus has been credited. And for most of us, a familiar story follows — by mid-December, we genuinely cannot say where it went.

This year, try a different script. Not the joyless “invest everything” sermon, and not the free-fall splurge either. A simple three-way split that honours what a Diwali bonus is actually for:

50% Celebrate · 30% Clear · 20% Compound

50% — Celebrate, Guilt-Free

Diwali is not a budgeting error. Gifts for parents, new clothes for the kids, the sweets, the diyas, the family dinner — this spending builds the life the money is for.

The trick is simply to cap it in advance. Take half the bonus, move it to a separate account or UPI wallet, and let the festival run entirely out of that pot. When it’s done, it’s done.

Why this works: an uncapped festive season doesn’t overspend by 10% — it overspends by 50–80%, usually onto a credit card at 36–42% annualised interest. A pre-decided celebration pot removes the single most expensive mistake of the season: festive joy financed at card rates.

30% — Clear the Costliest Debt First

Here’s the highest-return “investment” available to most Indian households, and it isn’t a stock: prepaying expensive debt. The order of attack (highest interest first):

  1. Credit card revolving balance (~36–42% p.a.) — if you’re carrying one, nothing else comes close. Clearing ₹50,000 of card debt “earns” you more than almost any legal investment can.
  2. Short-term app loans (often 24–36%+)
  3. Personal loans (typically 11–20%) — check foreclosure/part-payment charges first; many lenders allow free part-prepayment after a few EMIs
  4. Vehicle/consumer durable EMIs (12–22%)

Home loans and education loans sit last — lower rates, tax benefits, and your 30% is usually better spent killing the expensive stuff above them.

The math that convinces people: prepaying ₹30,000 on a card charging 40% saves you roughly ₹12,000 in interest over the next year — tax-free, risk-free, guaranteed. Name a fixed deposit that does that.

One more benefit nobody mentions: clearing card balances drops your credit utilisation, which typically lifts your credit score within one or two reporting cycles — right before the wedding-season and new-year borrowing you might actually need. 💡 Juggling three or more EMIs and card dues? One restructured loan often beats them all — explore a balance transfer / consolidation option and compare the savings with our balance transfer calculator.

20% — Compound: Plant One Seed

The final fifth is for your future self, and the rule is: make it automatic before the month ends. Pick one, based on where you are:

The One-Evening Exercise

Tonight, before the bonus dissolves into the account balance: open your banking app, move 50% to the festive pot, 30% against your costliest debt, 20% to the seed. Total time: eleven minutes. Then go enjoy the festival — every rupee you spend from the pot is now pre-approved by your future self.

Happy bonus, and an early Happy Diwali. 🪔
