Strip away the festive ads and look at the machinery underneath, and 2026 is a remarkable year to be an Indian borrower. The numbers tell a story of a credit system being rebuilt in real time — here’s the survey, and what it means for you.

Data Point 1: Government Credit Has Gone Digital at Scale

The JanSamarth portal — the Centre’s one-stop platform for 46 credit-linked schemes — sanctioned roughly 13.1 million loan applications in FY26, more than triple the previous year’s ~4 million. Whatever else is true, digital distribution of government credit now works at population scale.

Data Point 2: …And Rejects at Scale Too

The same portal reported a 43.2% rejection rate — and the finance ministry’s diagnosis is the most useful sentence in Indian consumer finance this year: the failures trace to incomplete documentation, inconsistent information, and applicants dropping off after approval — not ineligibility. The ministry has directed public-sector banks to integrate the portal with their lending systems, speed disbursals, and fix the drop-offs. Translation for borrowers: application quality is the new credit score. (Make yours bank-ready.)

Data Point 3: Underwriting Is Moving From Collateral to Cash Flow

A new MSME credit assessment model is being onboarded under the Department of Financial Services; the CGTMSE guarantee has been wired into the portal, making collateral-free MSME credit a discoverable product; and across banks and NBFCs, bank-statement and GST-based underwriting keeps gaining share. The borrower with clean digital cash flows now outcompetes the borrower with property but messy banking. (Your statement is the new CIBIL.)

Data Point 4: The Festive Credit Wave Is Structural

Every October–December, Indian consumer credit surges across cards, BNPL, consumer-durable EMIs and personal loans — and lenders respond with both louder marketing and tighter automated screens, a paradox we’ve unpacked here. The festive borrower faces more offers and higher bars simultaneously.

Data Point 5: Regulation Has Caught Up With Digital Lending

RBI’s digital-lending framework now mandates direct lender-to-borrower fund flows, Key Fact Statements with annualised cost disclosure, and cooling-off rights — pushing the predatory fringe out while legitimising the regulated core. The practical borrower rule remains: regulated lenders only, named clearly. (The 60-second scam filter.)

What the Survey Means for You

If you’re salaried: options have never been wider — which makes comparison, not loyalty, the money-saver. If you’re mid-CIBIL (620–730): the cash-flow shift is your friend; clean banking can now say what your score can’t yet. If you run an MSME: the system is actively being rebuilt for you — guarantee-backed, collateral-light, cash-flow-assessed; arrive with a bankable file while branch awareness is still catching up. If you’re over-leveraged: the same machinery that sells loans now prices consolidation competitively — use it.

India’s credit boom isn’t just bigger this Diwali. It’s differently shaped — and the borrowers who understand the shape get the best of it.
