You need funds. In 2026, you have four broad routes: government-backed scheme loans (46 schemes now live on the JanSamarth portal — Mudra, PMEGP, KCC, PM SVANidhi and more), bank loans, NBFC / digital lender loans, and debt consolidation — not new money, but restructured money.
Most people skip straight to “which lender?” That’s backwards. The route comes first — and the route depends on why you need the money, what your profile looks like, and what you can comfortably repay.
Start With the Purpose — Not the Lender
Four questions: Why is the money required — productive, essential, or discretionary? How much is genuinely required (not the maximum you’re eligible for)? How fast? And what EMI fits — income − existing EMIs − essentials = your real capacity. Sanity-check that last one on the FOIR calculator.
Route 1: Government Scheme Loans — Cheapest Money, Longest Road
Best for: farmers (KCC), new entrepreneurs (PMEGP’s capital subsidy), micro businesses (Mudra, CGTMSE collateral-free cover), street vendors (PM SVANidhi), subsidised housing and rooftop solar.
The honest picture: subsidised rates and collateral-free structures make this the cheapest credit in India if you get through. But the portal’s FY26 rejection rate was 43.2% — driven, per the finance ministry’s own analysis, by incomplete documents, inconsistent information and post-approval drop-offs rather than ineligibility. Timelines run weeks to months. Verdict: worth it when you clearly fit a scheme and have runway — and prepare with the bank-ready checklist.
Route 2: Bank Loans — The Middle Path
Best for: salaried borrowers with strong credit (roughly 730+), stable documented income, and a few days to spare. Larger tickets and relationship pricing if you already bank there. The honest picture: banks are the strictest gatekeepers — a mid-range score, a recent bounce, or thin self-employed documentation often means rejection or poor terms, and every full application is a hard enquiry. Verdict: if your profile is strong, compare at least three banks; rate spreads of 2–3% on identical profiles are common.
Route 3: NBFC / Digital Lenders — Speed and Flexibility
Best for: money this week; the mid-CIBIL segment (roughly 620–730) that banks routinely decline; self-employed applicants with real but hard-to-document income. The honest picture: approval in hours, fully digital KYC, bank-statement-based underwriting — at somewhat higher rates and fees. Non-negotiable safety rule: borrow only from RBI-registered NBFCs or platforms that clearly name their regulated lending partner. Verdict: the right tool for speed and mid-credit profiles — and the ideal backup track.
Route 4: Debt Consolidation — When the Problem Is the Loans You Already Have
If a chunk of your income disappears into three or four EMIs and revolving card interest at 36–42% annualised, another loan is not the answer — a better-structured one is. A genuine consolidation should replace costly obligations with one lower-rate loan, reduce your total monthly outflow, and close the old debts formally. Run the numbers on the balance transfer calculator, and if card dues dominate, start with a credit card balance transfer. If the consolidation EMI plus remaining obligations still exceed your comfortable capacity, you need a repayment plan first, not more credit.
Compare Total Borrowing Cost — Not Just the Rate
Interest/APR, processing fee, bundled insurance, penal charges, tenure, and total repayment (EMI × months + fees). Two loans with the same headline rate can differ by tens of thousands of rupees — the EMI comparison calculator makes this visible in a minute. Also know whether a quoted rate is flat or reducing: they are very different animals.
The Smart Borrower’s Move: Parallel Tracking
When timing matters: Track A — apply to your best-fit scheme or bank (cheapest money). Track B — get pre-qualified with a marketplace lender as backup. If Track A disburses, take the cheaper money. If it rejects or stalls past your deadline, Track B converts to disbursal within days. The one thing not to do: submit full applications to many lenders at once — the enquiry pile-up damages your score and your terms.
