You got the SMS: “Congratulations! Your loan is approved in-principle.” Then… silence. Days become weeks. The branch asks for “a few more documents.” You visit twice, hear different answers, and start wondering if the approval was even real.

You’re not alone. The Government of India’s own review of the JanSamarth portal found that applicants dropping off after in-principle approval is one of the top three causes of its 43.2% unsuccessful-application rate — and banks have been directed to fix post-approval drop-offs. Until that fix lands, here’s how to get your money across the line.

The Four Stages Borrowers Confuse

The pipeline: Eligible → Documents verified → Credit approved (sanction) → Agreement signed → Conditions completed → 💰 Disbursed. An eligibility result means you passed basic filters. In-principle approval means a lender is willing to lend, subject to verification — not that the amount or rate is final. The sanction letter makes terms official. Only disbursal is money. The gap between stage two and stage four is where files die.

The 11 Reasons Your Loan Is Stuck

  1. Name, PAN or address mismatch — automated systems stall on “Md. Irfan” vs “Mohammed Irfan”.
  2. Different income figures across documents — application says ₹45,000; slip says ₹42,300; bank credits average ₹39,800.
  3. Incomplete bank statements — missing months, screenshots instead of authenticated PDFs, or the wrong account.
  4. Missing salary credits — job change or cash component the statement can’t prove.
  5. Existing EMI burden discovered — the bureau pull revealed an undeclared obligation.
  6. Unclear business cash flow — lumpy credits, cash deposits, no GST trail.
  7. Employer or business couldn’t be verified — HR silent; shop closed on visit day.
  8. Pending KYC — video-KYC incomplete, Aadhaar OTP failing on an unlinked mobile.
  9. Unsigned loan agreement — sitting unopened in your email.
  10. Incomplete repayment mandate — the NACH/ECS mandate failed. No mandate, no disbursal. Ever.
  11. You stopped responding — missed calls from unknown numbers (that was the bank). Approvals lapse within validity windows, often 30–90 days.

Notice something? At least eight of the eleven are fixable by you, this week.

Your Next 48 Hours: The Unsticking Checklist

  1. ☎️ Contact the branch or lender helpline with your application reference number. Ask one precise question: “What is the complete list of pending requirements on my file?” — and get it in writing.
  2. 📄 Re-verify every application field against your documents. Hunt for the mismatch yourself.
  3. 🏦 Keep 6–12 months of authenticated bank statements ready — all pages, correct account.
  4. 📱 Check KYC and mandate status; complete anything pending.
  5. 📧 Check email and SMS (including spam) for an unsigned agreement you missed.
  6. ✋ Do not impulsively apply elsewhere while this file is live — new hard enquiries can sink the current approval.
  7. 🗓️ Follow up in writing every 3–4 working days, referencing days elapsed.

If the Branch Won’t Move: The Escalation Ladder

(1) Branch manager — polite written note with application number and days elapsed. (2) The bank’s regional grievance cell — every PSB publishes one. (3) The portal’s grievance mechanism, for scheme loans. (4) RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in — after giving the bank ~30 days. You’ll rarely need rungs 3–4; a paper trail at rung 1 usually does it.

While You Wait: Four Things Never to Do

Never pay anyone promising to “release” your disbursal — genuine bank staff never ask for money to process a sanctioned loan. Never share OTPs or net-banking credentials. Never edit a salary slip or statement to fix a mismatch — explain it instead. And don’t bridge the gap with a costly instant-loan app. (Loan scams to watch for.)

If This Loan Genuinely Won’t Work Out

Sometimes the sanctioned terms differ from the indicative offer, or the delay outlasts your need. Don’t walk away silently — formally withdraw (it keeps your record clean), then compare pre-qualified alternatives in one application. Juggling multiple costly EMIs? Evaluate consolidation via balance transfer rather than adding another loan on top. And make the next application bulletproof with the 7-point bank-ready test.
