Wedding Loans in India: Eligibility, EMI and Costs (2026)
Short answer: A wedding loan is usually an unsecured personal loan used for wedding costs such as venue, catering, jewellery and travel. Banks and NBFCs decide the amount and rate based on your income, existing EMIs and credit score, and money can reach your account within days once documents are verified. Borrow only the gap your savings cannot cover, compare the APR in each lender’s Key Facts Statement, and keep the EMI comfortably within your monthly budget.

What a wedding loan is (and is not)
Very few lenders offer a separate ‘marriage loan’ product. In practice, a wedding loan is a personal loan where the purpose is a wedding. You do not have to give collateral, the money comes to your bank account in one go, and you repay it in fixed EMIs over one to five years, sometimes longer. Because there is no security, the rate depends heavily on your profile.
Alternatives include a loan against gold, fixed deposits or mutual funds, a top-up on an existing home loan, or a credit line. These are compared later in this guide.
Who can get one: typical eligibility
Each lender sets its own criteria, but most look at the same five things. Our guide to how banks and NBFCs decide loan eligibility explains each in detail.
| Factor | What lenders usually look for |
|---|---|
| Age | Roughly 21 to 58–60 years for salaried applicants; the loan should end before retirement |
| Income | A stable monthly salary credited to a bank account; minimums vary widely by lender and city |
| Employment | Usually at least 6–12 months in the current job and 1–2 years total experience |
| Credit score | Many lenders prefer a CIBIL score of 700–750 or more; some accept lower with a higher rate |
| FOIR | Total EMIs, including the new one, typically within 40–60% of net monthly income |
Self-employed applicants are assessed on ITRs, GST returns and bank statements instead of salary slips. For the full document list, see personal loan eligibility and documents.
How much does a wedding loan cost? A worked example
Illustrative figures. Priya and Arjun need ₹5,00,000 beyond their savings. A lender offers 14% a year with a 2% processing fee plus 18% GST on the fee. Here is how the tenure changes the EMI and total interest:
| Tenure | EMI | Total interest | Total paid (incl. ₹11,800 fee) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 years (36 months) | ₹17,089 | ₹1,15,197 | ₹6,26,997 |
| 4 years (48 months) | ₹13,663 | ₹1,55,835 | ₹6,67,635 |
| 5 years (60 months) | ₹11,634 | ₹1,98,048 | ₹7,09,848 |
A longer tenure lowers the EMI by about ₹5,500 a month but adds roughly ₹83,000 of interest compared with three years. If your budget allows, pick the shortest tenure you can manage, and check whether the lender allows part-prepayment if you receive cash gifts after the wedding. Read the Key Facts Statement before you sign
Since 1 October 2024, RBI requires lenders to give a Key Facts Statement (KFS) for all new retail and MSME term loans. It shows the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), which includes interest and all charges, and the lender cannot charge any fee not listed in the KFS without your explicit consent (RBI circular on KFS). Compare APRs, not just headline interest rates. Our explainer on APR vs interest rate and the KFS shows how.
Also check:
- Processing fee and GST on it
- Foreclosure and part-prepayment charges (many lenders do not charge these on floating-rate loans to individuals, but fixed-rate personal loans may carry them)
- Bounce and late-payment charges
- Any bundled insurance, and whether it is optional
- For digital loans, the cooling-off period during which you can exit by repaying principal and proportionate cost; RBI’s Digital Lending Directions, 2025 require one of at least a day
Wedding loan vs other ways to pay
| Option | Typical advantages | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Personal (wedding) loan | No collateral, fixed EMI, quick | Higher rate than secured loans; affects FOIR |
| Gold loan | Lower rates; approval depends on gold, not score | RBI loan-to-value limits; risk of auction if unpaid. See our gold loan calculator |
| Loan against mutual funds or FDs | Lower rate; investments keep growing | Margin calls if markets fall. See loan against mutual funds |
| Home loan top-up | Long tenure, lower rate | Adds to a long-term debt; needs an existing home loan |
| Credit card EMI | Convenient for single big purchases | Card interest is very high if EMIs are missed |

Budgeting the wedding so the loan stays small
The best wedding loan is a small one. A few practical steps:
- Write a full budget with categories: venue, food, décor, clothes, jewellery, photography, travel, gifts, and a 10% buffer for overruns.
- Separate assets from expenses. Gold jewellery holds value; décor and catering do not. Some families prefer to borrow less for consumption and keep jewellery purchases within savings.
- Decide who pays what early, between both families, to avoid duplicate spending.
- Negotiate and book early. Off-season and weekday dates can be noticeably cheaper.
- Plan the first year after the wedding. Rent, a move, or a honeymoon may follow; keep the EMI small enough to absorb these.

Protecting your credit while you borrow
Applying to many lenders at once leads to several hard enquiries on your report. Check your score first, then apply where you are most likely to qualify. Pay every EMI on time; a missed EMI around the wedding month is common when cash is tight and it stays in your history for years. Read our credit and CIBIL score guide if your score needs work. Borrow only from banks and RBI-registered NBFCs; you can check an NBFC on RBI’s Sachet portal.
Illustrative example: a couple who over-borrowed
Illustrative example, not a real customer. A couple took ₹8 lakh over five years when they needed ₹5 lakh, because the EMI felt affordable. Eight months later, a job change cut one income for three months, and the ₹18,600 EMI became a strain. Had they borrowed ₹5 lakh over three years, the EMI would have been about ₹17,100 with far less total interest, and they would have been free of debt two years earlier.
Frequently asked questions
How much wedding loan can I get?
It depends on your income, existing EMIs and credit score. Lenders typically keep your total EMIs within about 40–60% of net monthly income, and the amount offered may range from tens of thousands to several lakh rupees.
Is there a special interest rate for marriage loans?
Usually not. Wedding loans are priced like any personal loan, based on your profile. Compare the APR in each lender’s Key Facts Statement.
Can both partners apply together?
Some lenders allow a co-applicant, which can increase the eligible amount because both incomes are considered. Both co-applicants become responsible for repayment and the loan appears on both credit reports.
Can I prepay the loan with wedding gifts?
Most lenders allow part-prepayment or foreclosure after a minimum period, sometimes with a fee for fixed-rate loans. Check the prepayment terms before signing.
Will a wedding loan affect my home loan eligibility later?
Yes, while it is running its EMI counts in your FOIR, which can reduce the home loan amount you qualify for. Clearing it early helps.
