It usually starts with one small loan to bridge the gap to salary day. A few months later there are four apps, repayment reminders every few days, and a new loan taken just to repay an old one. If that sounds familiar, there is a way out, and it does not depend on a miracle offer.

Short answer: To get out of loan app debt, first list every loan with its closing amount and due date, then stop taking new ones. Next, try the no-new-borrowing options (a tight salary-day plan, an employer salary advance, family help on written terms, or asking lenders to restructure) and consider a consolidation loan only if it covers every app loan in full. A consolidation loan may not be cheaper; its real benefit is one affordable EMI and an end to the borrow-to-repay cycle.

Step 1: Write down every loan and its true cost

You cannot fix what you cannot see. Open every app and note, for each loan:

The APR matters more than the “interest rate” an app advertises, because it includes fees. Our APR vs interest rate guide shows how to read it, and how a ₹5,000 app loan becomes ₹15,000 shows how fees and extensions add up.

Step 2: Stop the cycle before it grows

Every new app loan taken to repay an old one adds another processing fee and another short deadline. This is called loan stacking, and it is explained in why one app loan turns into five.

For the next 30 days:

A worked example: Arjun’s four app loans

Arjun, 27, Indore, takes home ₹38,000 a month. This is an illustrative example.

App loanAmount to close todayScheduled payments left
A₹20,000₹7,600 a month × 3 = ₹22,800
B₹15,000₹5,700 a month × 3 = ₹17,100
C₹10,500₹11,000 once, in 20 days
D₹12,000₹4,500 a month × 3 = ₹13,500
Total₹57,500₹64,400

This month he owes ₹7,600 + ₹5,700 + ₹11,000 + ₹4,500 = ₹28,800, which is 76% of his salary. After rent and food, that is impossible without borrowing again, so he keeps opening new apps.

A consolidation option (example terms). A lender offers ₹62,000 at 30% a year (reducing balance) for 12 months, with a 3% processing fee plus GST: ₹1,860 + ₹335 = ₹2,195, deducted upfront. He receives ₹59,805, enough to close all four loans (₹57,500) with ₹2,305 to spare.

OptionMonthly outgoShare of salaryTotal he repays
Keep paying as scheduled₹28,800 this month76%₹64,400 (if he never borrows again)
Consolidate over 9 months₹7,77820%about ₹70,000
Consolidate over 12 months₹6,04416%about ₹72,500

Be clear about what this shows. On paper, the consolidation loan costs Arjun about ₹5,600–8,100 more than the schedule. It is not a cheaper loan. But the ₹64,400 figure assumes he can find ₹28,800 this month without borrowing, and he cannot. Each extra app loan he takes to cover the gap adds new fees on top.

What the consolidation does buy him is one EMI, one date, a monthly outgo he can actually pay, and a chance to close every app account cleanly. Whether that is worth the extra cost is his call, made with the KFS numbers in front of him. If he can manage the 9-month EMI, he pays less in total than over 12 months.

Step 3: Try the no-new-borrowing options first

These do not add new debt, so look at them before any loan:

Our guide to breaking the app-loan cycle without another loan goes deeper on each of these.

Step 4: If you consolidate, cover every loan

A consolidation loan only works if it closes all your app loans. If the approved amount covers three loans out of four, the fourth keeps its short deadline and the cycle restarts. Our checklist for replacing five app loans with one walks through this in detail.

  1. Compare offers on the KFS: APR, total amount payable and fees.
  2. Make sure the money comes into your own bank account, as RBI’s digital lending rules require.
  3. Repay and close every app loan the same day or week.
  4. Download a closure letter or NOC from each app. See how to close a loan app loan and get your NOC.
  5. Check your CIBIL report after 30–45 days. Each account should show “Closed”.

If you also have card dues or BNPL bills, put them in one plan before you decide how much to borrow. If you borrowed in a hurry for a family or medical crisis, this guide to several emergency loans is a gentler place to start.

What to avoid

Your rights if recovery calls get ugly

RBI rules prohibit recovery agents from harassing, threatening or abusing you, or contacting your family and friends to shame you. Calls are restricted to between 8 am and 7 pm. If this happens, complain to the lender’s grievance redressal officer, and if it is not resolved within 30 days, to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in, free of charge. Read your rights against loan app harassment for the full steps.

Check before you apply

  • The APR and total amount payable in the Key Fact Statement (KFS), compared with what you pay today
  • Processing fee plus 18% GST, and any insurance or add-ons (ask whether they are optional)
  • Foreclosure charges on your existing loans and on the new loan
  • That the new loan covers every debt you plan to close, and that you will get a closure letter or NOC for each
  • Whether the new EMI fits your monthly budget after essentials and savings
  • That the lender is RBI-regulated: check our lender directory and loan app directory

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a personal loan to repay app loans?

Yes, as long as it covers every app loan and you close each one. Compare the total repayment on the KFS with what you currently owe. The loan may not be cheaper, but it can replace several short deadlines with one manageable EMI.

What happens if I stop paying a loan app?

Late fees and interest build up, the overdue is reported to credit bureaus, and your CIBIL score falls. The lender can also pursue recovery, within RBI’s rules on conduct. It is better to contact the lender early and ask about a revised schedule.

Will closing all my app loans improve my CIBIL score?

Closing them in full, so they show “Closed”, and then paying any new EMI on time usually helps over the following months. Lenders now report at least every fortnight, so changes show faster. A “Settled” status would hurt instead.

How do I know if a loan app is legal?

Check which RBI-regulated bank or NBFC the app lends for, and look both up in our loan app directory and lender directory. A legitimate loan shows a KFS before you sign and pays the money into your own account.
