For lakhs of Indian retailers, the arithmetic of the year is simple: Dhanteras week can sell what a normal month sells — if the stock is on the shelf. Empty shelves during festive footfall aren’t just lost sales; they’re customers who discover your competitor.

But stocking up has a cost curve of its own: suppliers want payment now, customers pay over the next six weeks, and somewhere in between sits your cash gap. Finance that gap wrong, and the season’s profit quietly leaks into interest and stress.

First, Know Your Festive Cash Cycle

Sketch your own version of this 60-day timeline:

Your financing need is short, sharp, and self-liquidating — the stock itself generates the repayment. That one insight decides which instrument fits.

The Four Ways to Fund the Stock

1. Supplier credit — use it first, price it honestly. Often the cheapest and often the most expensive, depending on one question: what cash discount are you giving up? If your supplier offers 2% off for immediate payment and you instead take 30-day credit, you’ve effectively paid ~24% annualised for that month. Sometimes a cheap loan to pay suppliers cash beats “free” credit. Do this math per supplier — it changes decisions.

2. Working-capital facility / OD — the right-shaped tool. A revolving limit you draw when buying stock and sweep down as sales land; interest only on the drawn amount, only for the days used. For a sharp seasonal cycle, this beats a term loan structurally. (New revolving products for micro enterprises are also arriving through the government’s JanSamarth portal — worth a look if you’re building a permanent limit.)

3. Short-tenure business loan — fine, if sized to the season. A 6–12 month unsecured business loan works when you don’t yet have an OD limit. Two rules: borrow against your realistic festive sales plan (last year’s season + growth, not hope), and check prepayment terms so bumper sales can close it early without penalty. (Compare the types of business loans here.)

4. Government-backed routes — cheapest, if you prepared earlier. Mudra loans and CGTMSE-guaranteed collateral-free credit remain the lowest-cost options — but with branch timelines, a loan applied for today may land after Dhanteras. Honest guidance: run a parallel track — a fast marketplace loan for this season, a scheme application for a permanent limit before the next one.

What NOT to use: your personal credit card revolving at 40% to buy shop stock, or a payday-style app loan. A season’s margin can vanish into either.

The 48-Hour Action Plan

  1. Compute your stock budget from a realistic sales target (not supplier enthusiasm)
  2. Price your supplier credit against the cash-discount math above
  3. Shortlist the financing shape: revolving if available, short-tenure loan if not
  4. Keep the EMI/sweep plan inside your post-season cash flow, with margin for a slow week — sanity-check it on our EMI calculator
  5. Apply once, with a complete file — check your headroom first with the FOIR eligibility calculator

May your shelves empty twice this season. 🪔
